The Heart Drawn on a Notebook:
Essays and Photographs of College Students at San Quentin

Prison University Project

Personal essays and photographs of San Quentin college students

This project features personal essays written by men at San Quentin State Prison who are enrolled in the only on-site, degree-granting college program in California's entire prison system.

Working in collaboration with the students, photographer Heather Rowley takes portraits of the men inside the cellblock, in the classroom, and in other meaningful places throughout the prison.

The essays and photographic portraits will be presented to the public at the San Francisco Public Library from November 2007 until January 2008. Audio recordings of students reading their personal essays will accompany large-scale prints of the portraits and reproductions of the students' written work.
